Biography
Ayaka Kato is a visual artist who is known for her vibrant and attractive colours used in her art works.
The vibrant colours used in her works are inspired by Japanese subcultures, and for her, the colours represent happiness, freedom and being a little rebellious of society.
She is also interested in how colours are used in Japanese subcultures and often combines Japanese traditional culture elements and subculture imagery to present a commentary on contemporary Japanese culture. She strongly feels the need to express herself as there is a saying in Japan, “Deru kui ha Utareru” (literally translated as “the stake that sticks up gets hammered down”) it means if you stand out, you will be subject to criticism, and she questions the Japanese culture of being “normal” and “ordinary” to fit in the society.
